iMO William Powell deserved an Oscar for this performance. He could play any role excellently and convincingly from drama to comedyI WP was always typecast as the resident ladies' man in mostly all of his movies, as I would think most women in movie audiences then simply adored him. I had to skip over the Cantor blackface routine, although I know Backface was a sign of the times in the 30s and part of the Ziegfield era. It was a horrinle part and stain in American history, but thankfully that practice was abolished. All in all, a great movie !

This absolutely was one of his best performances! William Powell was a gentleman in every way. In regards to Blackface you may think of it as a stain on American History, but as with other not so great historical events they paved the way for other advancements. By 1840, black performers also were performing in blackface makeup. Which allowed many African Americas being able to "break" into acting roles.and to show their abilities in front of the "White audiences" Frederick Douglass maintained: "It is something to be gained when the colored man in any form can appear before a white audience." Blackface was also one of the influences in the development of characters such as Mickey Mouse. So while yes, it would be unthought of in today's society Blackface was one of the stepping stones that gave Blacks a chance to shine, and show they were capable of performing just as well if not better than their white counterparts. We may not agree with history, and it sometimes isn't pretty...but it is what it is. And forgetting history puts you in a position to possibly repeat it...instead of accepting and learning from it.
