Oh, my word! I remember the Steinburg case so well. It was such a shock. Hedda Nussbaum was the most publicly displayed, surviving battered woman I (and most other people) had ever seen. Her torment was so raw and visible for the world to see. People who say "Why didn't she just leave?" don't understand how years of intimidation and manipulation are a form of brain-washing. And, many women stay because, if they leave, they might lose custody of their children or their rights to property accrued during a marraige, for example. She may not have anywhere to go because a controlling spouse usually starts with isolating her from any friends or family she has. It's never good to have to shoot someone, especially in the throws of rage but, for some, at that moment, it becomes, for them, a "me or them" scenario. Many would prefer to do time in jail than continue under the control of their abuser.
